Exploring Innovations in Medical Accelerators: Instrumentation Technologies presents at IFAST Project

At Instrumentation Technologies, we are always enthusiastic about participating in initiatives that help students learn and grow beyond the standard university framework. One such initiative is the 10-day innovation challenge “Accelerators for Healthcare,” organized by the IFAST project. This project unites students from various disciplines—including accelerator physics, engineering, chemistry, life sciences, and medicine—with industry representatives to explore novel accelerator concepts and advance the prototyping of key technologies. IFAST project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, alongside several partners, including CERN, ESI, the Hitriplus project, CNRS, GSI, and Oxford University.

Instrumentation Technologies LLRF Systems

Our colleague Phani had the opportunity to present our solutions during an online event in order to inspire and educate student on the accelerator instrumentation.  He showcased our Low-Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) system and its pivotal role in Medical Accelerators. The LLRF system is designed to maintain the stability and control of frequency, phase, and amplitude in the accelerator.  Additionally, it triggers the machine protection system in case of unexpected signals in the cavity or the RF distribution.

Innovation on the Libera LLRF

The most important part for the students was learning about Phani’s work at Instrumentation Technologies, where he focuses on developing a new LLRF system capable of operating at X-band frequencies (8-12 GHz). This development is significant because higher frequencies lead to smaller RF components and structures, which in turn enable more compact machines. These compact machines are easier to install in medical facilities, such as hospitals, thus enhancing their accessibility and utility in medical treatments.

For more information about our LLRF system and its applications, visit our Libera LLRF product page.

Keep on eye out on more updates about our developments on the X-Band.
If you are interested in the matter, you can take a look at Phani’s presentation for Libera Workshop 2024.
Phani will also present his work at LINAC in August. If you are there don’t hesitate to visit our booth, to ask him more questions!

We look forward to continuing our work in this exciting field and inspiring the next generation of innovators!
